Swedish anti-pop singer/songwriter Åsa Söderqvist (aka Shitkid) uses elements of lo-fi and post-punk to make music that runs against the grain of the mainstream.
Söderqvist left her home in the north of Sweden at age 16, moving away to study music, specifically guitar and vocals. At first she found it hard to perform, as she would regularly experience anxiety-induced blackouts on-stage; she stayed on her feet by self-medicating with alcohol before every show. Eventually, Söderqvist moved to Gothenburg, where she joined a feminist post-punk band, and was recording solo material on a half-broken computer in her spare time. In 2015, she began to upload some of her tracks to Soundcloud as Shitkid, where she found a much larger audience than her band, persuading her to prioritize her solo career. The following year Söderqvist reached out to Pnkslm Records, which was glad to release her debut single, "Oh Please Be a Cocky Cool Kid," and her debut eponymous EP. Söderqvist spent the remainder of 2016 on tour in Europe -- traveling on the interrail because she didn't have enough money to hire a van. Early 2017 saw the release of her second EP, 2, proceeded by her full-length debut, Fish, which arrived in June of the same year. ~ Liam Martin, Rovi
