Winner of the 2021 JazzTimes Readers’ Poll for Best Female Vocalist, the magazine writes that Canadian jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge "possesses a winsome, brightly burnished, pliable voice, with ample emotional intelligence, considerable songwriting skills, and conspicuously good taste.”
Toronto Music Report described, “...a stunning debut. Verbrugge addresses each with the breathtakingly, absolutely natural and unaffected purity of her voice.”
She released her 2019 debut on NY-based Gut String Records with piano trio backing from three veterans of the NYC jazz scene. The album hit number one in jazz on iTunes Canada.
Angela graduated from Toronto’s George Brown School of Performing Arts after growing up on the arts scene in Kingston, Ontario. After having three kids, she followed her passion to jazz by assembling a jazz education through self-study and mentorship from top musicians.
WSJ-writer Will Friedwald’ liner notes proclaim that Verbrugge possesses, "a vocal sound that's full of depth and nuance”. Angela is influenced by the swing era, vintage musicals, and traditional pop from the 1920s to 1950s. “Witty lyrics,” writes JazzWeekly.
Her recordings have been featured on global radio stations and have charted on Earshot and Jazzweek. George Harris at Jazz Weekly sums it up, describing, "she’s fun and quirky, hip and a hoot, wispy and romantic; she slithers and oozes, and cleverly swings... this lady is a bubbly Betty.”
