In 1988 Wishing Well hit number one in the U.S.A. Sign Your Name followed it into the Top Five and the album sold 14 million copies worldwide.
His mix of soul, rock, pop, and R&B recalled Prince, yet his sensibility was grittier and earthier. In 1989 Neither Fish nor Flesh, was released. The record attacked many self-consciously important themes, including homophobia and environmental destruction. The music added a variety of new textures, from Indian drones to straight-ahead '50s R&B.
When Symphony or Damn was released in 1993, it received favorable reviews. In 1996, he released Vibrator.
Since 1995, at the age of 33, he adopts the name Sananda Maitreya, both legally and artistically since 2001. @SanandaMaitreya
