France's Quatuor Arod (or Arod Quartet) may the first string quartet ever to credit a fashion designer (Blandin et Delloye, Paris) in its official website biography.
Violinists Jordan Victoria, Alexandre Vu, violist Corentin Apparailly, and cellist Samy Rachid have made news, however, not only for a photogenic quality, but also with fresh interpretations, especially of music by Felix Mendelssohn.
The Quatuor Arod was established in 2013 and first gained attention with a first prize at Copenhagen's Carl Nielsen Chamber Music Competition, followed by a win at the major ARD International Music Competition in Munich. The members joined forces when all were students at the Conservatoire nationale supérieure de musique in Paris and have continued their studies with Mathieu Herzog and Jean Sulem since emerging as a major concert attraction.
The Quatuor Arod has made appearances at major international festivals, including those at Verbier and Montreux (Switzerland), Aix-en-Provence, Menton, Salon-de-Provence, Folle Journée de Nantes, the Pablo Casals Festival of Prades (France), and the Heidelberg, Rheingau, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen Musikfest, Mozartfest Würzburg festivals (Germany). By the 2017-2018 season it was appearing at some of Europe's top venues: the Louvre, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Arsenal concert halls in Metz, Bordeaux, and Montpellier in France, London's Wigmore Hall, Salzburg's Mozarteum, the Schloss Elmau in Germany, the Bozar (Brussels), the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Tonhalle Zurich, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, among others.
In 2017 the Quatuor Arod achieved two major breakthroughs. It was named BBC New Generation Artist for a term running until 2019, and, signed to the Erato label, it released its first album, with a program of quartets by Mendelssohn. Along with the Artemis Quartett, it is artist-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Brussels. It co-commissioned a string quartet by French composer Benjamin Attahir in 2017, and it has frequently collaborated with other chamber artists.
