Raised in a musical family and the daughter of a music teacher, Joanna Karlsson’s interest in performance developed at an early age. Growing up in a sleepy village in southern Sweden, Karlsson found escapism in writing songs and performing them to her followers on YouTube. After switching the saxophone for the guitar, Karlsson was able to give voice to her compositions and write lyrics. Gradually amassing a small audience, her world opened up after posting a cover of Alt-J’s song ‘Breezeblocks’, now sitting just under 5 million views on the platform. “I was very surprised,” she recalls. “Having my channel was more about motivating me to practice and perform. I didn’t set out with a goal of having millions of views.” Finding new ways to find and connect with followers, Karlsson began to release a mixture of covers and original songs. “I don’t want to be just a covers artist,” she explains.
