The Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey region of America has produced some standout acts throughout the years and RatRod is the latest example.
This outfit is the brainchild of Mark McCarty (guitar) and Mike Smith (vocals), who separately played in many bands over the years. Even though they often shared the same stages on the same nights, they never managed to meet. Until one fateful conversation with a mutual friend led to a meeting. When the two musicians discovered they have the same true love and respect for old-school rock and roll, such as Australian stalwarts AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, The Angels, Jet, and Airbourne, music magic was certain to happen. The band now consists of Elliott Howard on drums, LilJohn on bass, and Matt Flanigan on the second guitar. If you are looking for soft, heartfelt ballads, look elsewhere. With titles like the fast boogie "Rat Like Me", the rocker "Ride It (Like Ya Stole It)', and the uptempo "Beds on Fire" you won't find them here! The songs are everything you would expect from two guitars and stacks of Marshalls; loud and in your face, but with catchy riffs, cool grooves, and nice vocal hooks that conjurer up recollections of the great Bon Scott. You will find in RatRod a band who pay homage to great rock and roll by staying true to the formula, yet adding their own twist and sensibilities that make them stand out from the crowd. And If you are able to see them live you will not be disappointed by the energy the boys release on stage.
