David 'Dr Duce' Smart, began playing the piano at age 5, going on to becoming a multi instrumentalist by his teens. He developed his musical gifts by playing both keyboards and bass in church as well as in several funk bands as a teenager. His first break came in the form of a recording contract in 1987 and his first TV recording opportunity with Sky TV in 1988. Inspired by his favourite musician, the legendary bassist Marcus Miller, Duce always felt drawn to composing and arranging music, which he did for his band as well as numerous other musicians and singers with whom he formed successful collaborations. Raised on a diet of the coolest of 70’s and early 80’s funk, soul and fusion Dr. Duce has drawn inspiration from such greats as Quincy Jones, George Clinton and Prince. 10 Years in Jail - Dr. Duce has spent over 10 years in one of the UK’s most notorious, high profile offender institutions. His time there however, has not been as an inmate but as a mentor and teacher to young men who have somehow lost their way but decided to turn things around through training in music. As a BA Honors graduate of the London College of Music, Duce also holds a Masters degree from Kingston University, UK, and PGCE from Greenwich University. He continues to work with individuals in prison as well as ex-offenders in the community. Additionally, Duce also runs the Music Tech Training Centre (www.musictechtrainig.com) creating high quality music production tutorial videos.
