The Small Calamities are a late-1990s alt rock band formed in 2015.
Their music has been described as "jangle pop/neo-90s sadcore" and "music that would be on a Shrek soundtrack", and frequently draws comparisons to bands such as The Mountain Goats, Grandaddy, The Weakerthans, and The Front Bottoms.
Cutting their teeth in cafes, clubs & churches (yes, really) in Los Angeles & San Francisco, they quickly developed a reputation for their unique and striking voice, juxtaposing frontman Charlie Wolf’s witty and observational lyrics with an eclectic mix of soaring synths, jangly guitars, and powerful drums. With a core lineup of drummer Hayden Parker, bassist Jim Posen, and keyboardist Reuben Bramanathan, the band is also known for bringing in an astonishingly diverse collective of collaborators, often featuring everything from back porch pedal steel to symphony orchestras.
They are currently finishing up their third studio album. Expected to be released in time for summer 2019, this album not only represents a marked step forward for the band in production quality, arrangement, and performances, but also helps cement their continued shift away from their folk roots towards an increasingly pop/rock sound. “We’re gonna get pretty loud,” says Wolf, “I had to buy a big jar of earplugs from Walgreens. They’re not very good.”
