The project of Sadek Massarweh, Jakob Hersch and Naomie de Lorimier started as a synthesis of Hamburg’s and Montreal’s musical self-conception: Sadek born and raised in Canada came to Germany in his early 20s to study.
In Hamburg, he met Jakob with whom he started to jam regularly, slowly finding their sound and trying out things. Naomie then joined the duo at the time where she lived in Berlin. These few jams in trio laid down the basis for what would later become Monako. By gathering Jannik Schneider, Laurens Bauer, Pamier Hilal, Jan Hendrik Schnoor and Valentin Hebel or la crème de la crème of Hamburg’s vibrant music underground, he became almost by accident the head of a broken social scene collective hailing between the continents.
Indie-Rock, RnB, dusty Trap – that’s the framework through which a dry, sensual groove moves timelessly on a chaise longue by a pool somewhere on the backside of the planet Mars. “The renaissance of the sensual melancholia. Slowly making its way out of the trap.“ This is how Massarweh describes the core of their sound. “Now Im in some big trouble” he states in their first single HHXMTL hinting at the connection between Hamburg and Montreal. Everything grooves, it’s sparkling darkly and the voice lays on a warm bass fundament.
