José Torres Trío gets its start in Seville in 2007, when José, flamenco guitarist from Elche, is invited to participate in the Guitar Festival of Ciutat d’Elx.
There with Jasio Velasco, violist from Granada, and the Finnish drummer Karo Sampela, he creates a project where they can pour out their musical interests. From the union of these three musicians, who are coming from different musical styles, surges an innovative musical proposal that resists the established canons of composition and performance of flamenco pieces. The result is a unique flamenco sound, achieved on the basis of a continual search for, and investigation of, new forms, textures, and acoustics.
In 2013, they recorded their first studio production, ‘José Torres Trío,’ where they brought in the collaboration of Carmen Linares.
The musical maturity of José Torres Trío is reflected in ‘(UN)STILL LIFE’, their second studio project, released in 2020. It includes collaborations with Cristian de Moret and Xema Espinosa, and it has established its own sound that is considered “hypnotic,” “very rhythmic” and “overpowering” according to reviews from knowledgable critics.
