The gift of Toronto’s The 25th isn’t simply in the stretching of a synthesizer to create a sound we’ve never heard before.
It’s the getting to know portion, where this new tone that rests somewhere in between that of real instruments, such as the piano, guitar and bass - all of which Gowie plays - is given an identity and a place to fit in. Be it looped, repeated or placed subtly in the background, every sound is where it ought to be. It’s a luxury mastery of the digital audio workstation (DAW) affords. It’s a remarkable sign of the times when coupled with the ability to write, sing and record everything in arrangement. And the result? We get music that’s becoming more and more vain to categorize. Experimental electronic meets rhythm and blues, or something like that. His debut full length was released via Brooklyn's Color Station in 2017.
Andrew Gowie grew up in Brampton, a city found on the northern portion of The Greater Toronto area. When Gowie was young he’d visit his great grandfather, who was a painter in Toronto, and read his art books on oil paintings and history. This led to The 25th Hr’s development, tying visual arts with music and creating something with depth or layers. Gowie dropped out of junior high school choir.
