one-four (I-IIII) is the moniker of London-based artist Joseph Bradley Hill, founder and host of Late Works, the permutable collective of artists, musicians, film-makers, designers, writers and dancers who populate a series of intermedia events of the same name.
His most recent event (Late Works: of Noise) included members of black midi, Goat Girl, Sorry, 404 Guild, Powerplant, Martha Skye Murphy, Kiran Leonard, Curl Recordings sampling and responding to six instruments built by four artists (including one built by Joe himself).
Joe carries the improvised nature of his events through to his music, sampling himself naïvely improvising on piano, with fellow musicians improvising over it - predominantly in the form of German saxophonist Jonas Anetzberger, with more recent contributions from double bassist Ted Mair (also a member of The Golden Dregs) and Biba Cole. one-four has gained early support from labels in the form of Bone Soda, JagJaguwar & Slow Dance Records, featuring on various NTS shows, playlists and compilations.
Influences include The Books , David Lynch , The Art Of Noise , Cristobal Tapia De Veer, John Cage, Mica Levi, Steve Reich, Oliver Coates, Penguin Cafe Orchestra & Portishead.
