In one of the photos, she was playing the bass guitar with a toothbrush hanging out of her mouth. He swiped right and sent her a message: let’s start a band.
Six months later, the couple —Abel Ibanez, a magazine editor, and Gemma Conroy, a science journalist and model— played their first show together as Goodnight Japan at a festival somewhere in the bush.
Armed with a lunchbox-amp and a clunky drum machine, they became regular fixtures at pubs around their hometown Sydney. On one of those nights, Joel van Gastel —who has played with Gang of Youths, I Know Leopard and Jenny Broke the Window— joined the band on stage without a single rehearsal. After that show, he ate three Philly Cheesteaks.
In November 2018, the three-piece recorded their debut album The Kitchen Is a Dangerous Place. Shortly after the album’s release, the band was sharing stage —and mezcal— with Future Islands, Robert DeLong, Stone Temple Pilots, Jade Bird, 2ManyDJs, among others, at Roxy Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Since returning home, Goodnight Japan have been recording new material in the studio, which will soon be released.
