John has been writing music for over thirty-five years. In 1979 he composed and recorded a "bump and grind" soundtrack for "Portraits from the 2 O'Clock Lounge”, a WGBH TV documentary by Fred Simon about Boston's legendary “Combat Zone” strip club. The R&B and pop songs he wrote and recorded have garnered critical attention and many of those songs were purchased in 2014 by Fervor Records for their Vintage Americana music library – (www.fervor-records.com).
In 2016, "A Charma Verde" was nominated for a Latin Grammy award for "Song of the Year".
In 2018 John began a new collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Emilio D. Miler from Buenos Aires, and together with Brazilian singer and lyricist Thalma de Freitas, they are writing and recording a new album of Brazilian songs. Their first two songs: "Sorte!" & "Oração," were recorded in April 2018 at the legendary studio The PowerStation at Berklee in New York with an all star group: Thalma de Freitas- vocal; Vitor Gonçalves - keyboards; John Patitucci - Bass; Duduka da Fonseca -drums, Chico Panheiro-guitar and Airto Moreira-percussion. This group returned to the Power Station in October 2018 to record 4 new songs for the album planned for release in 2019.
John is currently recording a new album of original instrumental compositions called "American Nocturnes" scheduled also for release in 2019.
