Winter Witches is a queer love story. It is both a creative and romantic partnership between Sweeney & Em.
Unspeakable Clothes – the Witches’ second single, sees the introduction of Eastern infused beats, paired with delicate synths, creating a sound that is at once ethereal and danceable. The B-side This Religion is a sweeping piano ballad with cinematic strings and rolling timpanis. Lyrically, the songs explore fractured queer identities in a decaying and corrupt world.
Winter Witches’ sound has been recently compared to both Dead Can Dance and The National, with elements of Depeche Mode and a heavy Scott Walker influence. Their previous, debut single Train/Water (released both digitally and as a limited edition, hand numbered 7-inch) has been described as having “genuine derivations of medieval, orchestral music and experimental electronica” (Cloudberry Mornings) and “brimming with fiery precision, a meaningful design, grace and charm” (Ghettoblaster Magazine). Both Train, Water and the digital bonus track Shame have received widespread national and international radio play including on Triple J, Australia’s largest alternative music station.
