Singer-songwriter and pianist Erik Mason has spent the last twelve months establishing himself as a riveting newcomer in the vibrant music scene of Asbury Park, NJ.
His upcoming debut album, People Like Us, is the culmination of a three year journey, where new perspectives and personal experience transformed him into a storyteller beyond his years. Though a performer all his life, in 2017 he decided to set college aside and lose himself in songwriting and artistry. After learning the ropes in Brooklyn, NY, he moved back to his New Jersey hometown to break into the area's buzzing music scene. Perfecting his live performance on the stages of the Stone Pony, Brighton Bar, and other Jersey Shore venues, his sound has evolved into an amalgam of influences old and new. As a narrator, he is thoughtful and articulate, focusing his lyrics on struggles and conflicts that arise in youth and bear consequences in adulthood. Following cues from artists like Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen, he weaves stories of everyday people into colorful soft-rock fabrics, observing social disparities through the eyes of innocence. Recruiting the help of eight musicians to bring his vision to life, Mason recorded his anticipated album at Shorefire Studios. Finding inspiration in the music of Billy Joel, Coldplay, John Mayer, and Dave Matthews, People Like Us strikes a consummate balance between paying homage to the past and carving out a fresh space in an increasingly crowded genre.
