The songwriting project of Hong Kong-Michigan-Brighton transplant James Li (also of Ministry of Interior Spaces), Liance tells emotionally raw stories of grief, pivotal moments, and love.
Liance’s first full-length, Bronze Age of the Nineties (produced by Johnson Cochran of Parlor Voice) is a high-context and ambitious folk album on the subject of loss. Drawing upon the frankness of Sun Kil Moon and the impressionistic songwriting of The Mountain Goats, Bronze Age of the Nineties is about the formative power of memory and how it can be maimed by young death.
The Golden Flesh EP was recorded by James Li in a dirty Grand Rapids basement. Channeling the DIY energy of Car Seat Headrest and (Sandy) Alex G, The Golden Flesh brings Liance a spirited new alt-rock direction. The lead single, Ellie Takes a Bath, uses drum loops by Ian Chang to meditate on ambiguity and the sinking haze of nostalgia.
James Li is also featured on I Don't Know What To Do Now, the first full-length by Grand Rapids emo/hardcore outfit Vagabonds.
