Liturgical Folk is a sound of liturgical renewal, pairing historic church language with modern folk sounds.
It is the “music in the bones,” effortlessly connecting souls to one another and to God. It is the “sound in the ground,” immediately accessible to those who live the most down-to-earth lives, and calling the cluttered into a simpler discipleship.
In 2015 retired priest and poet Fr. Nelson Koscheski stumbled into a songwriting partnership with church musician and composer Ryan Flanigan. Together they have written scores of new songs and hymns, rooted in the old spirituality of the holy catholic Church and the young sounds of Americana culture.
Ryan Flanigan has teamed up with producer Isaac Wardell (Bifrost Arts, The Porter's Gate, Sandra McCracken, Josh Garrels) to record four volumes of Liturgical Folk so far.
Volume 1—TABLE SETTINGS—sets the tone for this new music project with 12 lighthearted settings of service music from the Book of Common Prayer.
Volume 2—EDENLAND—contains 12 of the first twenty songs and hymns by Fr. Nelson Koscheski and Ryan Flanigan, teaching the astute listener how to approach human life and death with maturity and faithfulness.
Volume 3—CRUMBS—is a sequel to Volume 1, a devotional journey from confession through Eucharist into mission.
Volume 4—LENT—consists of 10 new Lenten songs and hymns, one for each service in the season of Lent. Featuring Lauren Plank Goans (of Lowland Hum), Liz Vice, and Josh Garrels.
