Montreal based artist, Rupert Common creates music in a way that is completely his own - Combining the gentle skills of acoustic folk music with the mentally ambidextrous art of Hip-Hop.
Born in Quebec, but raised in Scotland and Vancouver he first began creating poetry at age ten. By his early teens he got into comedy-rap, which matured through the art of freestyle into an earnest love for Hip-Hop. After entering into the slam poetry culture of East Vancouver, Rupert made his way into the local battle-rap scene where he flourished for a few years before switching his focus onto music. While learning guitar and writing his first songs at age 24, he began training more seriously as b-boy, and beginning to enter dance battles and host free, community hip-hop jams.
After 9 years in Vancouver, Rupert had co-founded a successful hip-hop collective, The Stew Jams, completed his composition and music theory studies ad VCC and defined himself as a community MC within the city - helping host the Vancouver Street Dance Festival and other accessible arts events.
Now living in Montreal, in the province of his birth, he is afforded the opportunity to live alone and focus even more on his music, dance and writing practice. He is currently working on the final stages of his album release for Veganese Folk-Hop Volume 2, and writing a play which combines hip hop elements with high fantasy.
