Ben Seretan (NYC) is trying to do a lot at once with his guitar - coax unending waterfalls of drone like a snake charmer, whisper like a breeze across power lines, rip it in half with his bare hands as the band chugs along.
But beneath these feats of strength, these tricks and licks, are bare and beating hearts, tender songs, as warm and vulnerable as a fresh croissant. He rips, but only because he cares, with the words "Ecstatic Joy" tattooed on his chest.
In 2020 Ben will release his first proper LP of songs in nearly four years. "Youth Pastoral" is out on February 28th, courtesy of Whatever's Clever, the label started by Ben in 2016 that's now become a collective of buds and collaborators.
Ben has been playing music for forever, but his first proper LP was 2014's self-titled, double album Ben Seretan. In 2016, following specific and unexpected fanfare in Italy, he followed up with Bowl of Plums, co-released with Love Boat Records and Buttons in Torino. In late 2017 Ben shared Plate of Pits, a collection of even-more-country b-sides from the Bowl of Plums sessions.
In 2018 Seretan released the astounding and kind of ridiculous My Life's Work, a *24-hour-long album* of ambient guitar, subdivided into 48 half hours and named for various visions of the present, dreams, memories, and desires from Ben's life. It might be the only album of its kind on Spotify.
Among other projects, Ben also plays electric guitar in the band Adeline Hotel and for Will Stratton.
