Chequerboard is the recording name of Irish musician John Lambert.
The Dublin born artist released his debut album ‘Gothica’ in 2002 blending downtempo electronica, lo-fi arcade melodies and blurred acoustics. This was followed by ‘Penny Black’ in 2008. "John Lambert fits hazy electronic skirmishes around classically tinged acoustic guitar, and the result is stunning. ” The Irish Times. ***** 5 stars.
Lambert then delivered a serene vision of acoustic minimalism in the form of ‘The Unfolding’ In 2013 which was mixed by legendary Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins).
“Based around Lambert’s gorgeous acoustic guitar playing and beautifully textured electronica these wondrous pieces of music are fleshed out by the inclusion of fleeting and occasionally ghostly vocals and mournful cello lines which together create a mood that is intoxicating. Will have instant appeal to fans of Post Rock’s quieter exponents and minimalist ambient classical music like Max Richter’s work.”
The album has since gone on to find a global listenership reaching 19 million streams to date.
Lambert continues the pattern of emerging every few years with new carefully crafted chapters to add to the Chequerboard story.
