Hard Times is a bargaining lament of the dollar, the ache of half-met responsibilities, true love, and the consolation of recognizing what you have. Both members of Winstons (Ben Brock Wilkes and Lou Nutting) left Virginia for New York chasing love. When they got there, they worked to stay broke. And they started a rock and roll band.
Hard Times was recorded in the fall at a chilly, closed summer resort in the Catskills. Forty empty rooms and fifty acres in a valley. They removed the furniture and set up a makeshift studio using mattresses for sound-proofing and whatever pieces of equipment they had accrued over the years. Over the course of the week, they lived on chili, kept a fire burning, and recorded their upcoming EP.
