The diversity of Brown’s musical experience is the driving force of upcoming full-length LFT:RT, due out March 5, 2021 – in fact, even its name refers to Brown’s intention for the release to break down the binary thinking that’s so often used to sort complex human life into simplified categories.
LFT:RT serves both as a sampling of the Portland jazz scene’s brightest young heavyweights and a perfect introduction to Brown as a solo artist of strikingly eclectic, forward-thinking style.
In 2019, Brown co-composed the album “Remote” -- a sonic journey from industrialization to the modern-day tech industry -- with his project Korgy & Bass & NOLA trumpeter Cyrus Nabipoor. In 2020, Barra & Co. released “Agrocrag” -- a bombastic and genre-transcendent album. This creative beat-making exploration culminated into a multisensorial performance in the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) planetarium show.
Barra’s musical exploration evolves with his new song-cycle “ These Souls” (May 2020). Written, arranged, and produced by Barra Brown with lyrics by Matt Brown and Maya Dagmi, “These Souls” is an ethereal sonic quilt weaving electronic textures harmoniously with colorful percussive compositions.
Barra has shared the stage with Robert Glasper, Makaya McCraven, Masego, Lake Street Dive, Gregory Alan Isakov, and others. He has worked with Tucker Martine, Michael Curry, OMSI, PNCA, Ages and Ages, Shook Twins, Morning Ritual, Old Wave, and the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble.
