"Vivacious melodies, stormy sounds, tightrope improvisation"
Coal Harbour has taken a bold approach to combining different musical traditions. The result is an individual sound that will take your imagination on new journeys. This Rotterdam group of creative freebooters has pirated elements and colours from the musical seas to produce a cutthroat style. Adopting a direct, swashbuckling approach with complete honesty, the collective gets everyone on board with the music they love.
Coal Harbour has a motley crew of strings, wind instruments and a rhythm section that combines a strong orchestral sound with intimate and controlled interaction. Catching melodies and energetic, raw grooves are forged into a musical story. An extremely wide- ranging public has already discovered this unique band sound and the pioneering programme, that includes arrangements of masterpieces from classical music and new compositions.
After appearances at the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival and Podium Witteman, and the release of the critically acclaimed EP 'Crossing the Canal', Coal Harbour released their debut album 'JOLT' in May 2018. It received a 5/5-star review in Jazzism and sets sail for new horizons with new compositions and arrangements of Debussy, Rachmaninov and Elgar. In 2018, you can see Coal Harbour at InJazz, Amersfoort Jazz, the Grachtenfestival, the Oranjewoud Festival and the Festival van Zeeuws Vlaanderen.
