Monique Ortiz is an independent American multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and visual artist, best known for her bass playing. Projects include Alien Knife Fight, A.K.A.C.O.D., and Bourbon Princess. Over the years Monique has often being pigeonholed as a “Dark Jazz” and “Garage Blues” artist, due in large part to the fact that she plays mainly fretless bass, and 2-string slide bass (an instrument made famous by Morphine frontman Mark Sandman). Contrary to that (mis)categorization, she is more influenced by the post punk, new wave, and art rock that came out of the U.K. in the late 70’s and early 80’s. She has developed her own unconventional approach to fretless and slide basses that are a bold departure from blues and jazz. The artists she often sights as her biggest influences include Wire, Japan bassist Mick Karn, Talk Talk, Joy Division, and Roxy Music to name a few. Currently (as of September 2020) Monique is working on a new solo record.
