Alter Heart is the stage name of Raleigh-based rapper and producer Cody Slingerland, whose music focuses on real topics and emotions that everyone faces at some point in their life—anxiety, anger, depression, stress, and emptiness.
Alter Heart’s latest single, “Going Down”, features a strong orchestral backing combined with aggressive vocals that tackle moving on from one’s past self and “burying the hatchet”. The track strays away from today’s popular Trap and mumble rap genres, and instead focuses on lyrical rap in the veins of artists like NF, Hopsin, or Mike Shinoda (of Linkin Park).
It’s clear that Alter Heart has a strong influence from rock-based music, with the heavy drum beats and overall composition in each of his songs.
Each track, including his last EP and the single, “Going Down”, were written entirely by Alter Heart, a practice that has become nearly extinct, with today’s rappers working with producers or buying beats in order to then lay down their vocals.
As Alter Heart puts it, “I wrote and produced all of the instrumentation, lyrics, and melodies...That's something that is important to me. Many rap artists don't write their own music. They buy a beat and record vocals over it. That has always been something I’ve disliked. I appreciate musicians that write their own music and I'm proud that I've written everything myself. The other way around seems like a cop-out.”
