Following last year’s duel releases of 'The Gork...And How To Get It!' and 'More Electric Music', Gorky are back with 'Mathemagician', their third full-length studio album, to be released April 12th alongside a book written by the band’s leader, current David Lynch Film School student Jesse Valencia, "Keep Music Evil: The Brian Jonestown Massacre Story," out April 16th in the US and May 1st worldwide on Jawbone Press.
'Mathemagician' features eight new recordings by the band tracked over the past year and engineered by guitarist Benjamin Turner, with Tevin Crabdree on bass, Ben Holladay on drums, and Valencia on lead vocals and guitar. Like their earlier records, Mathemagician rides a fine line between garage rock, post-punk, psychedelia, and power pop through its half-hour of jangly gems. The record’s first single, “Action Pants,” was included in AZ Central’s Best Singles of 2018 and received airplay both in the US and in Europe. The song also received some production advice from The Dandy Warhols’ Courtney Taylor-Taylor, who told Valencia he wished he’d written the song himself.
The album's title is a reference to what Valencia describes as the band’s creative process. “Music is arranged sound. That’s where the math comes in, and then the way we like to work in the studio is to make up stuff on the spot, so there’s this other element where the magic comes in,” he says.
