In 2017, Heywood met producer and studio/label owner Joshua Olsen at Syntax Physic Opera’s open mic. They teamed up to record her first EP at Third & James Studios, produced by Olsen and backed by a full band: Aaron Rothe (keys), Duncan Britt (Rhodes) Michael Sandoval (lead guitar), Wes Barton (drums) and Trevor Vader (bass.) In a collaborative, relaxed composition process, the group reimagined Heywood's songs over the course of seven months, keeping much of the structure and the exact lyrics/ vocal melodies from her solo songs. The group called on Heywood's influences from soul to pop and folk, creating a full, bright landscape for Heywood to weave her emotive lyrics and melodies through.
The Wind, It Howls was released in March 2019.
