Somewhere in the intersection of indie, pop and electronic lies young Chinese-Canadian artist, songwriter and producer Ken Gao.
As a storyteller, his lyrics describe scenes which create a visual experience for the listener, carried by memorable hooks. The Toronto-based artist describes his production as “intimate yet atmospheric”, and attention is brought to the nuances of every tone—like the hammers of his staple piano sound. Melodies weaving between muted, deep kick drums, creates an energy that fits both a dancing vibe as well as one for the drive home.
Having a musical foundation on the piano, Ken eventually discovered his calling with music production at age 12 and started making beats and remixes. Over time, he developed his sound, in time for his official 2017 debut single, “I’m Yours”. This song became a part of the Open Sky EP, released later that year. The project’s title track, featuring viral YouTube cover artist Elise Hsiung (Silv3rt3ar), became an organic breakthrough track and put him on the radars of listeners around the world.
In 2018, he released Pictures, Vol. 1, the first instalment of a series with themes of nostalgia and memories. Enlisting the help of vocalists, including Sing! China season 2 contestant Curley G, Ken aimed to paint a nostalgic moment in the listener’s mind.
