Justin Billinger began playing the piano at age 5 and soon after he received classical piano lessons he started showing a great interest in developing his own musical ideas.
He was born in London and then at age 11 his family moved to the Netherlands. His adolescence was influenced by Bach and other classical composers, as well as by the minimalist and experimental sounds of Steve Reich and Frank Zappa, and the electronic pop music by Bowie and Pink Floyd.
He studied composition with Louis Andriessen, Dick Raaijmakers, Gilius van Bergeijk and Jan Boerman at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, continued with master classes under the tutelage of Brian Ferneyhough, Olivier Messiaen and John Cage and obtained a summa cum laude with a degree in composition electronics. In 1992 he won a commission to write ballet music for the Holland Festival for the Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili
His most recent album, Mindfulness is inspired by the contemplative connection between the present and the environment. By using magic squares as a prime source of material, Billinger creates compositions in which the piano generates encapsulating sounds with semi random, yet controlled equations.
Mindfulness produces a mesmerising attraction that keeps us connected with the moment while expanding our perception beyond our own reality.
