Former jazz students turned live-wire post-punk trio, Auckland, New Zealand's Wax Chattels are among the most original post-punk revivalists of the 2010s: Along with their guitar-less lineup, the band's subject matter ranges from anti-consumerist tirades to homages to sci-fi heroes.
Bassist/vocalist Amanda Cheng and keyboardist/vocalist Peter Ruddell formed Wax Chattels a few years after they met studying Jazz Performance at the University of Auckland. The pair initially wrote songs to a drum machine before enlisting former classmate Tom Leggett as a live drummer to make their live shows more intense. The band released its debut single "Gillian," a tribute to The X-Files' Gillian Anderson, in August 2017. Early the following year, Wax Chattels signed to Captured Tracks and their homeland's legendary label Flying Nun Records. Largely recorded in a few days, the band's self-titled debut album appeared on both labels in May 2018. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
