Juwon Simmons is a Gothenburg-based music artist, writer and poet. Born in Cameroon, he moved to Sweden in 2009 where he started working on music alongside producers Dmitry Quik Ivanov and Darjan Dakey, while studying at the university, releasing tracks like "The Work" and "Make it better" which were instant favorites in the underground community and received great reviews from Kingsize Magazine, Sweden's biggest urban music platform.
He gained wider notoriety with the single "Celebrate" which featured co-artist Mehari and producer Dakey and went into rotation on Swedish radio. He was the 2014 Poetry slam Champion for Jönköping city, and proceeded to compete at the nationals with his team bringing home the bronze prize in 2014 and again bringing the silver prize in 2015.
With several musical influences picked up during his time growing up and time as traveling international student, his anecdotal /story-telling lyricism is influenced by the style of the griots of West Africa and the Hiphop styles of the Chicago and the Midwestern scene, strung to roots of Neo-soul, jazz, blues and modern experimental sounds. Writing in contemporary urban and sometimes classic fashion for effect, his work focuses mainly on philosophies of life, society and the human mind, Afrocentrism in relation to the world, affirmation of gender equality, power and socio-political paradigms, responsible freedom of action, expression and the link between self improvement and social reformation.
