But with the EP Passenger, Stray Local explores a robust new sound that showcases their folk prowess and Lomas’s powerful vocals in service of a newfound indie pop sensibility. Be prepared to groove. Violin riffs burst into these soulful, atmospheric songs, while galloping banjo underpinnings hint at the group’s deep southern roots.
Lomas and Rowen both hold degrees in music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where they met as students and formed a casual songwriting relationship that grew into Stray Local, and then into a distance running partnership, and eventually into romance. The pair is featured on the August 2017 cover of Runner’s World, running on a beach in southern vacationland, but they are anything but tourists in the south. Before they began running--and winning--distance races, Stray Local was running the long musician’s trail: folding new places, people, instruments, and genres into their increasingly dynamic sound.
