    Want This - DJ Kendo,
Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica’s notorious Cockburn Pen neighbourhood, 29-year-old Kemar Vershawn Brown, aka Vershon, embraced music from an early age.
One of three siblings raised by a single mother, he looked up to local heroes like Super Cat as inspiration, and remembers Boney M’s classic 1978 recording of ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ being a particular influence when he wrote his first song and sang in church at just nine years old.
The 2015 hit ‘Inna Real Life’ which would mark his global breakthrough. “After ‘Inna Real Life’, my whole life changed inna real life!” he reflects. “I started to travel every week. I even moved from the ghetto; taking care of my family, taking care of myself.” The success of the track brought him to London for the first time, where he was championed by 1Xtra’s Seani B, and included on the station’s Hot For 2016 list alongside J Hus, Kehlani and Mabel.
‘Only One’, is Vershon’s first project release on a major label under a new deal with Saint Music / Parlophone. The six track EP masterfully balances his credibility with an international pop sensibility and bridges the gap between London and Jamaica assisted by a carefully curated line-up of guest features including the Chip, Trillary Banks and Busy Signal. Vershon feels good about the next stage of his career, of which this is the first chapter. “It’s a team now, it’s with a big label. It’s well put together. I’m very excited about that.”
