Born on the remote Elcho Island off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory in 1970, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu picked up his instruments of choice, the double bass and acoustic guitar, from a young age.
A keyboardist in influential Aboriginal collective Yothu Yindi for seven years, he formed the short-lived outfit Saltwater before embarking on a solo career with his 2008 self-titled debut album, a number three hit in his homeland and winner of two ARIA Awards that was sung entirely in his native Yolngu language. Following the 2011 follow-up Rrakala, he performed on "Sing," Gary Barlow's official anthem for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
