Yorta Yorta descendent Scott Darlow opens his debut LP, Sorry, with a thunderous guitar-heavy riff and accompanying gut-punching line: “they put you in the ground, but it’s me that feels cold”.
It sets a certain tone. Darlow leaves no space for subtly on Sorry, spreading his plainspoken prose equally across introspective evaluations and — as expected, given his history as an indigenous activist and World Vision spokesperson — a prominent political edge. He finds his best balance on the standout title-track, where his clear cries for a national apology sways between perspectives, landing with most impact when the singer-songwriter pleads to “look into [his] eyes and share [his] pain”.
Similarly, musically it’s all front-foot rock, oozing in confidence and honesty, where a fist-pumping rendition of classic “Solid Rock” — with a guest spot from Goanna’s Shane Howard — sounds in-step with originals that cross the spectrum from country (“All I Am”) to heartland rock (“Runaway”) to more traditional pop (“Secret Self”), all unified by Darlow’s passionate, anthemic approach.
