J. Mark is the real first initial and middle name of J. Mark Tebben, a Denver-based writer and musician.
While working on a farm in New Jersey, J. Mark bought a ukulele and used it to write a few songs. He continued songwriting after moving to Colorado in 2014, building a catalog of simple songs with deep themes of grief, doubt, love, and identity that use Herman Melville's "Moby-Dick" as a jumping-off point. Somewhere along the line, J. Mark picked up an electric ukulele and a loop pedal, and in 2016 he began performing his songs in and around Denver, using the uke and looper to create rich arrangements with just four strings.
In April 2019, J. Mark will release his debut full-band EP, "The Ishmael EP," on Dork Mansion Records. He has begun recording "Or, The Whale," a full-length album to be released in 2020. When he's not doing music, J. Mark writes fiction, paints, and serves on the advisory board of Stain'd Arts, a nonprofit focused on creating space for unheard and subversive creative voices.
