Commanding a fluency in musical languages across genres and with a wide-ranging output, James’ music can be heard in classical concert halls, intimate jazz clubs and on festival stages. Two key features emerge as uniting concerns: a commitment to melody in all its forms, and a powerful interest in stimulating the personal creativity of performers. Born in 1989 in London to Irish-immigrant parents, James is active as a composer, performer and music educator and has earned plaudits including from Bradley Creswick, former concert master of Royal Opera House, Philharmonia and Royal Northern Sinfonia (“captivating and inventive compositions… an exceptional sense of beauty, imagination and fun” – for Duo Dances),

London Jazz News (“the perfect blend of hip and nostalgia” – for the James Brady Jazz Orchestra), the Guardian (“a properly stirring experience” – for the Wilderness Orchestra), and the 2018 Eddie Harvey Award and a PRSf Composer-in-Residency at the Sage Gateshead. Current projects include ECHO choir premiering Dunt in 2021, completing an collaborative audio-visual work during lockdown with East London Community Band and a second volume of violin duos (Duo Dances), after the first was playlisted by Spotify in May 2020. His first EP under his own name, Vesperados, was released on Turquoise Coconut Records in July 2020.
