Jim is entranced with the "old way" of studio recording, following the footsteps of studios like Hitsville USA (Motown) or engineers like Rudy Van Gelder (Blue Note). By the way of making studio gear and employing off-beat techniques and clever microphone placement. Hoboken HiFi likes to record the band all at once, in the same room, mostly in no more than 3 takes to capture the live feel and the nuances of each musician playing off each other.
Jim is also known for his weird ways of employing reverb to his recordings. His most known creation is "The Slinky." A reverberation unit made from, you guessed it, a Slinky. Other creations include "Reverb Squared" (a iron squarebeam) and the "Cigar Box" (mattress springs stretched and bolted to the inside of a cigar box).
All Hudson Soul recordings feature artists from around the world. But what makes the recordings unique is that they are all recorded by the same studio band in the same studio to ensure a cohesive sound and quality.
