An alternative country singer/songwriter hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, Leeroy Stagger released his first record in 2005 and spent the next decade building a solid cult following for his richly textured Americana.
When Stagger started playing music, he sang punk rock in Victoria, leading groups called the Graveyard Sluts and the Staggers. These bands made enough of a ruckus to earn the attention of Hot Hot Heat, who invited Stagger on a Canadian tour in 2002. After this trip through his homeland, he eased himself into country, beginning with the Six Tales of Danger EP in 2002. The full-length Dear Love appeared in 2004, which was followed the next year with Beautiful House. "Just in Case," an album track from Beautiful House, appeared in a January 2006 episode of Grey's Anatomy, setting up the release of Stagger's third album, Depression River, later that year. During the recording of his fourth album, Stagger got sober, a journey chronicled on 2009's Everything Is Real. Its 2011 sequel came out on a Megaforce subsidiary, while Gold Lake issued Radiant Land in 2012. Truth Be Sold appeared in 2013, Dream It All Away came out in 2015, and Stagger signed to True North for his 2017 album Love Versus, which was the first album he made in his studio in Alberta. It may have been made at home, but the record boasted some heavy hitters, including Neko Case's guitarist Paul Rigby and Pete Thomas, the drummer for Elvis Costello & the Attractions. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
