Seabuckthorn is an alias for the solo work of English acoustic guitarist & multi-instrumentalist Andy Cartwright (Mt Went) who uses the techniques of finger picking & bowing combined with various open tunings to form a mixture of approaches, often with layered accompaniments.
Generally the songs lean towards to the experimental genre, whilst on the edge of the ambient and folk.
Previous albums have been released on labels Bookmaker Records (FR), La Cordillère (FR), Lost Tribe Sound (US), Eilean Rec (FR) and a collaboration with ambient/electronic artist Loscil has been released by Thesis Project (US). Sonido Polifonico (UK) also released a split with guitarist Dean McPhee.
Having grown up in Oxfordshire and lived in the cities of London, Paris & Bristol, Cartwright currently resides in the southern Alps where the mountain landscapes inspire music making.
Cartwright has been actively touring internationally, performing live in festivals & events throughout Europe.
Several songs have featured in film, documentaries and contemporary dance.
There have been two releases in 2020. First the album Through A Vulnerable Occur which is the result of a dialogue between the photographer Sophie Gabrielle and the music of Seabuckthorn, initiated and released by IIKKI (FR) in March 2020 on Vinyl/CD/Photobook. The most recent album Other Other was released by Fluid Audio (UK) focuses on bowed and plucked prepared guitars.
