Desert Ships make psychedelic music. The band released their debut album ‘Doll Skin Flag’ in 2012.
The album, produced by Mark Gardener (of resurgent shoegaze band Ride), was met with critical acclaim. Alan McGee (founder of Creation Records) described the band as having “great fucking songs” and Gardener, when asked about his time with the dream-wave trio, enthused “they nail it on so many levels…it was a total pleasure, a total trip.”
In 2014 they released ‘Skyliner’, also produced by Gardener. Drowned In Sound found it “simply breathtaking”, whilst Written In Music described it as “a super-driven psychedelic trip into space.”
The band returned on 14.09.18 with new single ‘Hammerhead’. They follow this with their third album ‘Eastern Flow’ on 01.03.19. Mixed by Gardener and recorded at Abbey Road Studios by Haydn Bendall (Kate Bush), and Alex Scannell (The Bees).
This record expands on their dream wave sound, exploring unorthodox structures with imaginative vocal arrangements, an explosive keyboard sound spectrum, and augmented by brass, percussion and Gainsbourg ‘Melody Nelson’ era strings - performed by members of The Heritage Orchestra and arranged by Jules Buckley (Quincy Jones, John Cale).
It veers wildly, from a ‘Pet Sounds’ melody chamber one moment, to a night-time autobahn soundtrack the next. The experience is a ten-song kaleidoscopic sensory overload.
