One of the leading female fixtures on the Roots and Blues scenes, Janiva Magness is a recent Grammy nominated artist and winner of the Blues Music Awards' B.B.
King Entertainer of the Year Award (only the second to go to a female, after Koko Taylor). She has garnered seven Blues Music Awards with 26 nominations. Her 2014 album 'Original' charted in the Top 10 on Americana and Blues radio and was a milestone for her with more of her own songs and a nomination for Song of the Year. In 2016 she was nominated for the first time for a Grammy Award for her Billboard, #1 Blues radio, and Americana radio charting album Love Wins Again. In 2017 she released an EP titled Blue Again of covers of songs by Nina Simone, Etta James, and Bo Diddley, which she said took her back to her taproot.
Although singing has always come natural for Janiva, her early life’s path has rarely been rosy. Early in life she lost both parents to suicide. Shortly after came 12 foster homes in two years. At 16 Janiva became an emancipated minor with chemical dependencies and a teenage mother putting her baby up for adoption. Turmoil was a daily part of her young life. Since she has found salvation in the blues and the music she records and tours with year around and worldwide.
Janiva Magness has been a full-time recording and touring artist for nearly three decades including a stint for Chicago blues label Alligator Records and currently with Los Angeles label Blue Elan Records.
