As a kid on the southside of Chicago, KAMAAL (also known as KING KAMAAL) started writing poetry and making beats on two-tape recorders.
Inspired by a list of legendary greats like A Tribe Called Quest, NWA, Ice Cube, east/west coast hip hop, he grew up battle rhyming on street corners, subway trains, school lunch rooms. Even barber shops (for free haircuts where he eventually met his mentor, the legendary Dug Infinite:). Influenced by hiphop, 70's music, classical, house, gospel (his mother was once an aspiring gospel singer). Like many others, through his music he sought to escape the inner city madness outside my bedroom window."
Often collaborating on projects with other artists & producers. As poet, producer, songwriter...his lyrics convey an uncommon depth. With a distinct music sensibility he rides the beats as if an improvisational instrument. KAMAAL (KING KAMAAL) has also been a part of independent billboard chart topping jazz projects.
