Dog In The Snow is the nom de plume of Brighton-based Helen Ganya Brown who experiments with existential-driven lyrics and layers of off-kilter sounds to create a peripatetic musical landscape.
Drawing inspiration in the juxtapositions: the warm project title goes hand-in-hand with the grim ending of Kafka's ’The Trial'. Inspired by the dark underbelly of Scott Walker, the mortal anxieties of Sufjan Stevens, the glistening soundscapes of Susumu Yokota, Helen also finds influence from her own experience of being mixed race and a foreigner to her homelands, whilst exploring self-identity in its culture and ideas.
Debut album Consume Me was written whilst on tour with Fear of Men in 2016. Dealing with fragmented explorations of the self and the world consuming her, the ten tracks album is a cohesive and minimalistic masterpiece full of introspective, playful pop. Consume Me is a cyclical journey, lyrical themes emerge and repeat, song-titles show up as words in other songs. Beds of warm synths intermingle with gritty guitar and, at times, jagged programmed drum beats. The result is an all-consuming world of mixed identities.
