John has founded and fronted bands like Urban Principle and the Pipelines and been in bands that supported a diverse stream of iconic Australian acts from INXS, Men at Work, Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Cold Chisel to AC/DC, The Angels, Hush, The Dingoes, Rose Tattoo, Paul Kelly, Mental as Anything, Radio Birdman and The Birthday Party. He has been releasing material and honing his musicianship in a trail of bands that included early Goanna and early new wave post-punk electronica outfit, Kikx.
John has been an indie filmmaker since the 1980’s and is involved with a Blues and Roots music side project: Sons of The Blues, performing live with Patrick Byrne and Jerry Speiser.
John’s daughter, Nadia Phillips is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and recording artist in her own right. She accompanies him sometimes when recording his songs.
