Raised in Stockholm, her father being a professional musician, music was always present. Esther started playing piano at a young age and eventually drums before the big revelation that these two instruments could be combined in the vibraphone as she applied to music school as a classical percussionist.
In senior year she’d then record a school project featuring her singing and accidentally showcase a talent she’d not yet discovered herself. Her potential did not go unnoticed, as owner of Teenage Engineering Jesper Kouthoofd invited her to play at a festival in Denmark. There she was introduced to Pontus Winnberg (a reputable producer and member of Miike Snow), and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Jamming with these musicians she proved a natural in an overwhelming setting. As their set drew to an end Jesper pointed at her and shouted ”play and sing!”, making her wrap up the concert all by herself. That was the first time ever that she sang and played the vibraphone at the same time.
Her career path was never a conscious decision but more of a natural progression. Pontus Winnberg reached out to her after that evening of jamming in Denmark and offered to collaborate.
”I want to show there’s beauty in the ugly” she says. And her music does carry a momentum as it seems to extend those brittle moments before the fall. The drum machines are resolute against the dreamy backdrop of synthesizers and her voice is tender, proposing where to find the light in the dark.
