Andrea Poggio is full of intriguing contradiction. Throughout his music he challenges the traditional, while having a classical Italian air about himself.
Just like Milan, the city he lives in, he combines sophistication with innovative and forward thinking. His solo album “Controluce” (2017) is a lyrical and musical treat for those who appreciate elegant and sensitive narratives of everyday life tided up with original, synthetic sound. “Controluce” is an album loaded with extraordinary, yet well-balanced blend of synthetic and acoustic sounds (“Addormentarsi” and “L’Autostrada”) of minimalism with its repetitive modules and rhythmical off beats rooted in hip-hop and drum and bass (“Fantasma d’Amore” and the opening track “Controluce”). Written over three years, “Controluce” was recorded in the second half of 2016 between Milan and New York by Eli Crews, American producer, who apart from having worked with The Julie Ruin, Why? and Deerhoof, is the main creator of the sound of “Whokill” and “Nikki Nack” from tUnE-yArDs. The album was recorded with participation of Enrico Gabrielli (Calibro 35, PJ Harvey, 19’40”), Sebastiano De Gennaro (Baustelle, 19’40”), Yoko Morimyo and Adele Nigro (Any Other), who enriched the album with her vocals. In January 2017 “Controluce’ was mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound.
