The earliest experiments were hesitant and tentative, as the players struggled to escape the usual and familiar chordal and rhythmic frameworks of jazz, as well as letting go of their long-internalized personal playing habits and styles. But as the work continued week by week, new intuitive abilities and confidence began to gently emerge and solidify, until, after about a year of this practice, Steven and Harrison found that they were able to easily and spontaneously create complete new pieces of music from start to finish, "on the fly" as it were. Thus, with a name inspired by an upcoming trip to North Africa, the duo Neon Egypt was born.
