Many would agree that the “rock is dead” rhetoric is more popular than ever. However, the Albany-based dark fuzz group Good Fiction believes that rock isn’t dead; just changing.
The band formed in spring of 2015, when highschool friends Pat Grace and Alex Wollyung felt that there was a lack of loud, fun, aggressive, guitar-driven music in their home city. And when they couldn’t find the right drummer, Grace hopped on the kit, taking over drums and lead vocals. This unique setup proved to work, and recruiting another friend on bass duties, the trio immediately set out playing high energy shows around Albany’s live circuit.
After picking up traction from the local scene and gaining a following, the three haphazardly recorded the Call Me (By Name) EP in one week. While the debut release was met with praise, the band felt that they wanted to move in a fuzzier, darker direction.
The culmination of this new mindset lead to And the Walls…, released in 2018. The sonic change and DIY work ethic clearly paid off, earning the group opening spots for national acts such as X Ambassadors, The Joy Formidable, The Academic, and Sir Sly to name a few. Good Fiction’s live performances have consistently created a buzz, as The Alt Weekly states, “their sound begs to tear the room apart. You can easily picture yourself in front of a live show as it all crashes over you as the speakers combust.” The band has hinted at yet another release within 2018, and touring to follow.
